Ice Skating through the Centuries

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

Ice skating has a long history. In fact the origins of ice skating date back to the early ninth century. The purpose then was far more practical, however, than recreational. The earliest ice skates are believed to have been found in London and made of horse bone. It is believed that these skates served utilitarian purposes such as movement from place to place in order to search or scavenge for food rather than the largely recreational purpose that most ice skates have in modern society.

Ice skating over the centuries has become more of a recreational activity and provides long hours of entertainment to both skaters and spectators alike. From figure skating to ice hockey all around the world there is a fondness for this particular activity that transcends time and speaks volumes about both the complexity of this activity and the simplicity of it.

Ice skating is a sport that is both loved and hated by its practitioners. For some the entire sport is ice skating, for others the actual act of skating on ice is simply one aspect of a very complex and multifaceted activity. And others are simply content to skate. In and of itself ice skating provides a significant challenge for those just learning and becomes second nature to those who have been doing it for long periods of time.

The difficulty of ice skating is much like that of roller skating. Once you learn, you never really forget. You may have a few unsteady moments in the beginning after a long absence but all in all it comes rushing back once you get out there and try again. Whether you are an avid skater or simply a breathless spectator of the sport, I’m sure you’ve found the dichotomy between the beauty of figure skating and the brutality of ice hockey fascinating. I know I certainly have.

Weight Lifting is a Multi Purpose Exercise

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

Weight lifting in addition to developing muscle mass actually assists the human body in burning fat. For every pound of muscle you have, you will burn 35-50 calories a day. This is why you may notice that those who lift weights regularly seem to eat more, their bodies are constantly burning fat and they need to replenish the calories that are necessary to feed cells. Building muscles by lifting weights will help you passively burn calories.

Lifting weights is a great way to work out, increase your personal energy level, and develop good muscle tone, as well as a way to bulk up. For many guys bulking up is the primary goal of losing weight and girls have for a long time resisted the idea of lifting weights for fear of bulking up. Fear no more ladies, by building muscle tone you are eliminating fat and burning those pesky calories.

In addition to those goodies is the energy boost that lifting weights provides. If you lift weights early in the day you will have an initial boost of energy, if you find that you are sluggish near the middle of the day, try lifting weights then. I believe you will find that lifting weights will provide just the spurt of energy you will need in order to make it through the remainder of your day. Others find that lifting weights late in the day is relaxing and prepares them for a good nights rest.

In today’s world where obesity is becoming more prevalent in young and old alike, developing a habit of lifting weights on a daily basis is a great way to tone your body and help your body passively burn calories. If you haven’t considered this as part of your daily fitness regimen, then perhaps it is time you do.

Understanding The Check Engine Light

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

On all modern vehicles there is a computer that controls the way the engine operates, this computer is called Electronic Control Module, or ECM. The purpose of the ECM is to maintain the engine running within emissions limits and at top efficiency. With the very strict emission regulations of today, this is not an easy task to achieve. Precise and constant adjustments to match various conditions of the engine must be made by the ECM in regards to speed, load, engine temperature and others.

How the ECM works:

A number of sensors are available that provide the ECM with the information it needs, such inputs are engine and ambient temperature, vehicle speed and load. The ECM makes adjustments by advancing or retarding the ignition timing, adds or subtracts fuel or increases and decreases the idle speed.

In the exhaust, before the catalytic converter, an oxygen sensor monitors the quality of the combustion produced in the cylinders. The sensor produces a feedback that is then used by the ECM to make fine adjustments to the fuel-air mixture with the objective to reduce emissions. After the catalytic converter, another sensor in the exhaust monitors it’s efficiency

Other additional emission control systems exist, such as the Evaporative System, or EVAP. The objective of EVAP is to prevent vapors of gasoline, from the gas tank, from being released into the atmosphere. There are also a number of sensors and actuators that are controlled by the ECM.

The operation of sensors and other engine components is constantly tested by the self-diagnostic capability of the ECM. If one of the signals is missing or if it’s not in the normal range then the Check Engine light is illuminated and the Diagnostic Trouble Code, DTC, is stored in the memory of the ECM. The Check Engine light will be illuminated also if a mechanical component, such as the EGR valve, fails.

With a special scan tool, the stored code can be retrieved by a technician, that will then know only a direction where to look for. The code doesn’t tell specific information about the failure, certain tests have to be performed for each code, in order to find the exact cause of the problem.

Are you a problem gambler?

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

Although gambling addiction affects less than 1 percent of all people, it is an issue taken very seriously by online casinos around the world.

A problem gambler is someone who feels this compulsive need to keep gambling despite the affects it is having on his/her life.

There are certain criteria that define a problem gambler, including, but not limited to, gambling until every dollar is gone, gambling a longer period of time than planned, thinking about gambling causes you to lose sleep, you have tried to and can’t stop gambling and you leave bills unpaid and spend all your money on gambling.

Addiction gamblers don’t always necessarily gamble in regular methods, at casinos or lotteries, for example. People with this problem will bet and gamble on anything, even meaningless bets with friends or coworkers. This contradicts the idea that land-based and online casinos encourage and create problem gamblers. If there isn’t a casino online or nearby, a problem gamble will bet in other ways.

If a person is having trouble determining if they, or someone they know, has a gambling problem there are many tests online from various problem gambling institutes that they can accurately determine if they are affected.

Casinos and online casinos have also taken steps to identify and help problem gamblers, although they acknowledge the fact that most problem gamblers identify themselves first and seek help. If you think that you or a loved one may have a gambling disorder, there are also support groups like Gamblers Anonymous (http://gamblersanonymous.org/).

This article was written on behalf of Online-Casino (http://www.online-casino.com). At Online Casino we are dedicated to helping problem gamblers and completely advocate responsible gaming.

How to Choose the Best Online Casino for You

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

If you are a regular Internet surfer, chances are you’ve come across a colorful online casino site. You can’t miss it, not just because it suddenly pops right up in front of your screen when you least expect it, but also because, most often, it’s a very animated and colorful site complete with flashing lights and blinking signs.

If you’re anything like me then seven out of ten times this page pops up you get the urge to click the ENTER button just to have a look-see and, well, who knows, maybe win a couple of bucks. Each time though, the fear of the unknown stops me. What if it’s a scam and I end up giving out my credit card information to robbers? What if I bet, win then never get my winnings paid to me? It wasn’t until I started reading up on the topic and visiting similar sites that I learned that my excessive fear was unfounded. Sure, some online casino sites may not seem too reliable, but there are a lot that are.

How then do you choose the right one for you? Here are some tips I gathered from reading up on the subject. It will help put your mind at ease when choosing the best online casino to play in.

• Licensed and covered by an insurance policy. A legitimate online casino operates with a genuine license and is bonded and covered by an insurance policy.

• Has an accessible and knowledgeable Customer Service. A reliable online casino always has an efficient and accessible Customer Service to assist you in case you encounter any problems or have questions pertaining to your account.

• Has satisfactory player rating. Good online casinos receive positive players’ ratings. You can view these ratings in several online casino portals.

• Maintains an efficient payment and pay back system. Prior to registering and paying for an online casino account, check out the various payment options to see how reliable these are. Find out also from their Customer Service how quickly they pay up winnings. Compare fees with other online casinos and watch out for any hidden charges. Remember, you will be entrusting your money and/or credit card information to this site so make sure it’s legitimate.

• Has a clear layout and uses an industry approved gaming software. A respectable online casino site must not be sloppily laid out and must be running smoothly and correctly without interference or lock-ups. The gambling system software it utilizes must be within industry norm and you can check this because all properly licensed online casinos are required to reveal the software they use on their pages.

These are just some points to look into before choosing an online casino to play in. Remember that playing is supposed to bring you pleasure and not heartache in the event that you are not able to collect your winnings.

Choose well, therefore, before actually tossing those dice.

Kite Surfing Fastest Growing Water Sport

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

Kite Surfing is the fastest growing water sport in the world. It is not wind surfing, it is not wakeboarding, it is not surfing; it is not kite flying. It is the fusion of these disciplines with other influences to create the wildest new water sport for years.  Popularized by French and Hawaiian stars in early 1999, The UK scene now has approximately 7,000 kite surfers.  The U.S. has more than five times the number of kite surfers.

This dramatic interest in the athletically demanding sport has given AKSA founders encouragement about the value of their newly founded organization.  Logan Long, co-founder of the association was not surprised by the results; “It’s just simply the biggest adrenaline rush available.  The combination of air, water, land, wind power, physical strength and balance the force of nature are the qualities that attract Kite Surfers.”

American Kite Surfing Association is the leading organization for kite surfers in North America.  Founded in 2006 by two extreme sport enthusiasts, membership is anticipated to exceed 30,000 before the end of the year.  The purpose of the enterprise is to bring heightened awareness to this fast-growing, dynamic, and fun sport.  A vast array of information, products, and techniques are available to the visitors of the AKSA website, www.kite-surfingusa.com. After more than a decade of popularity through Europe and Australia, active North American extreme sport athletes are recognizing the maximum adrenaline rush through kite surfing.  According to Cathi Long, co-founder of AKSAArticle Search, “The exhilaration of hang time in kite surfing is unbeatable…kite surfers are simply the sexiest athletes.”  AKSA will select 50 leading industry product manufacturers to highlight and profile throughout an extensive national media outreach campaign.

Top Ten Things I Would Like To See Regarding Baseball

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

1 Put the designated hitter in the National League or remove the DH in the American League. Let’s create some uniformity. It is crazy when the world series is played. The home team uses the DH when the games are played in an American League Park. But there is no DH when the games are played in the National League Park.
2 Re: Ground Rules or Grounds Rules or Grounds Rule – Not Grounds Round or ground beef. I never know what they call the play. If, in the opinion of the umpire. I know I know, some of you do not like opinions, especially by umpires. But the umpire thinks that Derek Jeter should score on a well hit ball by Alex Rodriguez that a fan touches. Derek Jeter may have been running on the pitch. The umpire thinks that Derek should score even though the ball went into the stands or a fan touched the ball. Derek Jeter is then sent back to third base if the fan touched the ball. Let the man score already. Do not send him back to third base. See how confusing it is.
3 Food and drink at the ball park costing less than a mortgage payment. I suggest having a special night where people can eat at ½ the regular price for a hot dog. Half price night.
4 Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Derek Jeter, Tony Lazzeri, Graig Nettles and Bill Dickey play as a team. Today. So what if I am a little wacky.
5 The plastic bag liner that is used in the Metrodome is torn down and replaced with Saran Wrap. For no good reason, except to see how it would look.
6 All stadiums with retractable roofs. In case I am at a game and it starts to rain or the weather gets too cold. Hey close the roof.
7 Mel Allen is announcing games again.
8 People that at one time loved baseball. Now because of a strike, or steroids, or corked bats or exorbitant salaries, or whatever issue they had with the game turned away from baseball. They rekindle their love for the game and have some baseball fun.
9 My daughter (she plays softball) bats over .600 this year.
10 Your team wins. Unless they are playing against my team.

AKSA Adopts BKSA Kite Surfing Road Rules

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

Kite surfing Road Rules adopted by the British Kite Surfing Association have been adopted by the American Kite Surfing Association.  The key message is, “If in doubt don’t go out.”

  • Be sure that you can handle the prevailing weather conditions and never sail in offshore winds unless it is in a suitable location.

  • The upwind rider gives way to the downwind rider.

  • The rider on the port tack gives way the rider on starboard tack.

  • Kite surfers using the seafront should give way to other water users and retreat to a safe zone outside of the navigational channel when other craft approach.

  • The seafront can get exceptionally busy both on the beach and in the water. No matters how competent you are, or good the conditions look, never risk the safety of others.

  • Always maintain a 50-metre downwind safety zone between yourself and other craft. In the event of coming into conflict with other water users stabilize your kite at noon.

  • Never kite surf within 50-metres upwind of any moored vessel.

  • Never kite surf in or near to the bathing areas and swimmers, buoys and boat moorings.

  • Never practice jumping on land or close to the beach.

  • When returning to the beach, give way to riders who are launching.
